Redland Bay Overview

Redland Bay is a suburb south-east of Brisbane and is part of the Redland City local government area. It is named for the bay it sits on, which forms part of larger Moreton Bay. Once a thriving farming community, shops, school and houses now make the vibrant bayside community a popular lifestyle choice for many residents. A golf course, pubs, clubs and restaurants make Redland Bay a pleasant place to live, work and play. A small shopping centre provides residents with local shopping needs, with larger centres just a few minutes drive away at Victoria Point. The Redland Bay Arts and Crafts Markets are a popular attraction on the Esplanade each second Sunday of the month.

Since the first settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, Redland Bay has remained a farming and fishing-based area until the mid-20th century when some of the farms were subdivided and improved transport infrastructure made it possible for residents to commute the 40 kilometers into Brisbane.

The township has long been the port for vessels plying the bay islands. These islands include Russell Island, Macleay Island, Karragarra Island, Lamb Island and North Stradbroke Island, home to several thousand residents enjoying an idyllic, sub-tropical lifestyle 'far from the madding crowd'.

Redland Bay township was established in the 19th century by settlers attracted to the fertile volcanic soil and pleasant climate. The redness of Redland Bay soil derives from iron oxides present in lava from a volcano that erupted (millions of years ago) in northern New South Wales, some 100 kilometres to the south.

Redland Bay is the gateway to the southern bay islands, with passenger and vehicle ferries leaving regularly from the Weinam Creek ramps, a couple of minutes drive from the town centre.
